HYPE is the native token of the Hyperliquid blockchain, an ecosystem built around high-performance on-chain trading, staking, and decentralized applications.
If you're new to Hyperliquid, buying HYPE may initially seem more complicated than purchasing a cryptocurrency through a traditional centralized exchange. However, Hyperliquid provides a native spot market where users can purchase HYPE directly.
For many users, the basic process is straightforward:
Set up a wallet → Get USDC → Connect to Hyperliquid → Deposit funds → Open the spot market → Buy HYPE
This beginner-friendly guide explains each step, the difference between spot HYPE and HYPE perpetuals, and the security precautions you should consider before making a purchase.
What Is HYPE Token?
HYPE is the native cryptocurrency of Hyperliquid.
It has several important functions across the ecosystem, including:
Staking and validator participation
Network security
HyperEVM gas fees
Trading fee discounts
DeFi applications
Ecosystem incentives
HYPE can also simply be held and transferred as a cryptocurrency.
For beginners who actually want to own HYPE tokens, one distinction is particularly important: you should use the spot market, rather than opening a HYPE perpetual futures position.
Hyperliquid's documentation confirms that its infrastructure supports both spot and perpetual markets, and HYPE has its own native spot market.
What Do You Need Before Buying HYPE?
Before starting, you generally need three things:
1. A compatible wallet or Hyperliquid account
2. Funds to deposit
3. Access to Hyperliquid
Hyperliquid currently supports connecting through standard EVM wallets as well as email-based onboarding. Its documentation lists wallets such as MetaMask, Rabby, WalletConnect-compatible wallets, and Coinbase Wallet among the available options.
For the traditional self-custody route described below, you'll use an EVM wallet.
Step 1: Set Up a Crypto Wallet
The first step is setting up a compatible cryptocurrency wallet.
Popular EVM-compatible wallets can be used to connect to Hyperliquid.
When creating a new self-custody wallet, you'll normally receive a secret recovery phrase, sometimes called a seed phrase.
This phrase controls access to your wallet.
Never:
Send your recovery phrase to another person
Enter it into an unknown website
Give it to someone claiming to be customer support
Store it publicly or in an unsecured location

Hyperliquid's onboarding documentation specifically warns that anyone who obtains your private key or recovery phrase can access your funds.
Step 2: Get Funds for Your Hyperliquid Account
A common way to fund Hyperliquid is with USDC on Arbitrum.
USDC is a dollar-denominated stablecoin and can be used to purchase assets on Hyperliquid's spot market.
If you're using this route, you'll generally need:
USDC on Arbitrum — used as trading funds.
ETH on Arbitrum — used to pay the blockchain gas required for the deposit transaction.
Hyperliquid also supports onboarding with several other assets and networks, but the USDC-on-Arbitrum route remains one of the easiest methods to understand for beginners.
Important: Check the Network
When transferring USDC from another wallet or exchange, verify that you're using the intended network.
For this method, that's:
Arbitrum
Crypto assets can exist on several networks simultaneously, so selecting the wrong network can result in complications or loss of funds.
A small test transfer can be sensible when moving a significant amount for the first time.
Step 3: Open Hyperliquid
Next, go to the official Hyperliquid application.
Hyperliquid App
Phishing is a major risk in cryptocurrency, so avoid clicking unfamiliar advertisements or links that imitate Hyperliquid.
Checking and bookmarking the correct address can help reduce the chance of accidentally connecting your wallet to a fake website.
Step 4: Connect Your Wallet
On the Hyperliquid interface, select Connect and choose your wallet.
Your wallet will display a connection request.
Review it and approve the connection if the domain and details are correct.
Hyperliquid may then ask you to enable trading by signing a message. According to its onboarding documentation, enabling trading uses a gasless signature.
Remember:
Connecting or signing a legitimate message does not require revealing your seed phrase.
If any website asks you to enter your recovery phrase simply to connect your wallet, stop immediately.
Step 5: Deposit USDC to Hyperliquid
Once your wallet is connected, select the Deposit option.
If you're using the Arbitrum method:
Make sure USDC is available in your wallet on Arbitrum.
Keep a small amount of ETH available for Arbitrum gas.
Enter the amount of USDC you want to deposit.
Review the transaction.
Confirm it through your wallet.
Hyperliquid's official onboarding guide states that its native USDC bridge connects with Arbitrum and that ETH is needed for gas when depositing USDC through thi
